She performed leading roles in many films from 1972 to 1985.Reena Roy was the third daughter of a Muslim father and a Hindu mother. Her parents divorced after having four children together. She started acting in films in her early teens to support her mother and siblings.Reena Roy’s career in films started off with a non-starter, BR Ishara’s Nai Duniya Naye Log with another newcomer Danny Denzongpa, but it was shelved temporarily. Undeterred, BR Ishara cast both actors again in Zaroorat (1972), along with another newcomer Vijay Arora, and the racy film got her some attention. She was now called the “Zaroorat Girl.” Yet, she struggled for the next four years in B grade films that had feeble scripts and faltering leading men. Produced and directed by Prakash Mehra, it stars Amitabh Bachchan in his third out of six films with Prakash Mehra to date. The films also stars Vinod Khanna, Raakhee Gulzar, Rekha and Amjad Khan. Story: Ishan falls in love with Chandni but cannot marry her because he’s Hindu and she’s a Muslim. The elders think their marriage will stoke the fires of communal frenzy once again, a la Partition….Ishan’s parents seek a solution by turning back the pages of history. Movie Review: This one’s not only dealing with history, it dabbles with a kind of cinema that seems to have become history too. You have the boy and girl serenading each other by singing songs in Kashmir; you have them taking a shikara ride; and you even have them ending up in a fire-lit hut after a skiing accident with the girl freezing of cold and the guy doing stuff that Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore did in days of yore. Oh come on! Who’s got the patience for such euphemisms and moth-balled romances! Some of our film makers surely need to take a reality check and see what’s happening in Indian cinema, of late. Keep pace or keep counting the viewers in the audi, literally on your finger tips. And what’s the long line of veterans doing in this weepy affair. Rekha, Rishi and Hema are totally wasted, even as the debut pair leave much to be desired.
